“The Gospel of Cruelty as Cultural Heritage (Metanoia Arthopaedic: Ice Doctrines – Variations on Nazi Rhetoric)”
Analyses the performance of Ice Doctrines by Metanoia Theatre Group, which the participants in the New Faces programme had seen the previous evening. She explains that the script consisted largely of quotations from pre-existing sources: memoires of Holocaust survivors, speeches by Nazis, and modern utterances from the far right on the internet and the like. By focusing on the often theatrical language of the perpetrators of the Holocaust, which prepared the minds of ordinary citizens for their crimes, Metanoia also looks in the mirror and shows how the theatre can also be used for evil purposes. People’s innate ethnocentric impulses can easily be brought out by language, but can also be curbed when people are made aware of the dangers, by productions such as this.

Analyseert de voorstelling IJsdoctrines van het Metanoia Theater, die de deelnemers aan New Faces de avond tevoren hadden gezien. Ze legt uit dat het script grotendeels bestond uit citaten uit bestaande bronnen: memoires van overlevenden van de Holocaust, toespraken van nazi’s, en hedendaagse uitingen van extreem rechts, op het Internet en dergelijke. Door de nadruk te leggen op de vaak theatrale taal van de daders van de Holocaust, waarmee gewone burgers geestelijk rijp werden gemaakt voor hun misdaden, kijkt Metanoia ook in de spiegel, en laat het zien hoe theater ook voor kwaadaardige doeleinden kan worden gebruikt. De ingeboren etnocentrische impulsen van de mens kunnen gemakkelijk naar buiten worden gebracht door taal, maar ook beheerst wanneer mensen bewust worden gemaakt van de gevaren, door zulke voorstellingen.
